FCC Culture Weekend

The FCC Rochester Culture Weekend is a weekend of activities with fellow adoptive families the first weekend in August.  Everyone enjoys the outdoor fun, dining together, and partaking of a multitude of family and cultural activities.

The Culture Weekend is held on the campus of Keuka College located right on the shores of Keuka Lake in Keuka Park, NY.  Keuka College has beautiful grounds and families can enjoy the use of all their facilities, including the waterfront where paddle boats, canoes, and swimming are available.  Most families will stay in air conditioned rooms where they can relax and unwind, waking up to a perfect view of a magnificent Keuka Lake sunrise.

FCC-Rochester is an all-volunteer organization and all adult attendees will be assigned a job based on our needs at Culture Weekend.  There are optional volunteer opportunities for children as well, either as Raffle Ticket Sellers or as CITs (Counselors in Training).  Read below for age requirements and details about those positions.  Jobs will be age appropriate, but parents should be prepared to help their children by making sure they arrive to their designated assignment area on time, and also let them do their job according to how they are being trained.

We will assign your volunteer jobs BEFORE YOU ARRIVE and you will be notified of your exact job(s) when you check in.  Depending upon the job, you may get more than one assignment.  If possible, we will notify you by e-mail prior to Culture Weekend.  If you have indicated that you can arrive early to help, please plan on doing so (in that case we will notify you by email ahead of time of your assignment details).  Everyone will receive complete written instructions and a contact person for their particular job.

On the registration form, indicate any restrictions or limitations that you may have.   The Volunteer Committee is asking for your children’s ages and usual nap time (if any) so that they can take into consideration your family needs and responsibilities during the weekend as well.  If you have special family circumstances that you want us to be aware of please mention them.  We will attempt to not assign both adults during the same timeframe.

CITs (Counselors in Training)

Our CIT program has been going strong now for several years.  Minimum age for a CIT is 10 years old or entering 5th grade in the Fall.  They must have attended at least one year of Culture Weekend.  They must have a desire to work with or help younger children.  Their duties during the weekend usually cover the DJ Dance Friday evening (decorating ahead of time and encouraging everyone to participate by dancing) and the Culture Trail Saturday afternoon, although there might be minor duties at other times.

This year there are two car washes, which are team building activities with other CITs and with our Jr. Counselors and Counselors.  Details are below.  Please choose one or two shifts to work.  There is also a mandatory on-site orientation for CITs Friday afternoon (in past years it has been at 3:00 p.m.), so you need to be prepared to arrive at CW early.  If you cannot arrive early it makes it very difficult for us to prepare the CITs for their duties.

CITs must fill out an application (obtain by emailing geosha@rochester.rr.com).  Please submit as soon as possible so that we know how many CITs to expect.

Raffle Ticket Sellers

Minimum age 8 years old.  This is a way that our younger kids can start to volunteer.  During every meal time, the kids will work in teams of 2-4 going table to table selling tickets.  They will be responsible for asking people if they want to buy a ticket, explaining the raffle, counting out the appropriate number of tickets off the roll, handling the money, and making change.  There will be a parent in charge, who will help if necessary, but most of the kids are pretty independent after receiving help with the first table or two.  On the registration form indicate preferred mealtime (we will try to accommodate this request, but cannot guarantee it) and if your child has buddies they would like to be paired up with (we will make every effort to pair them with someone they know and are friends with).

Guests

Sometimes families will want to bring a guest along to Culture Weekend.  A guest is anyone who is not encompassed in the family circle.  Family relatives, such as aunts and grandparents, are regulars at Culture Weekend, and we welcome them.  Relatives such as these do NOT need prior approval, but please indicate the relationship on the registration form.  However, prior approval is needed for anyone who is not a relative, or whose purpose for being there is not strictly as part of the family unit.  Please contact Sharon Abbott at 585-704-8442 or geosha@rochester.rr.com if you have a guest you would like to bring to CW.  At a minimum, approval is needed from the co-chairs.  In some cases, approval might be needed from the Culture Weekend committee, or on occasion the FCC Board.  We will take each case individually
